Mia's not the only one who got excited! I read the title of this post and I thought that St Pat 'imself was going to be there. Told a redneck about St Patrick a couple years ago. The stuff about shamrocks and chasing the snakes and junk. He was pretty intrigued about driving the snakes out of Ireland. He wanted to know what he did with them. I told him I didn't have the vaguest idea and it never occurred to me that he did anything with the snakes. He got a sort of disgusted look and said,"They's purty good eatin', ya know."

Sure 'n it's meself is thinkin' that even the snakes from Ireland themselves twoud have more respect for themselves, isn't it, then to crawl around on *their* bellies...which is as low as himself can get; than to go to a place where they'd be ABOVE the HIGHEST Taliban dog of a person snivellin' in the caves of great misfortune in fear of the storms of rath that's bein' put upon them by America's mighty forces!!!
Ya think??
As for St. Patrick's Day in West Palm...let the games begin!!

Leaven' on a jet plane, soooo I leave with the words of E. Gary Brooks:

Whenever I dream, it seems I dream
Of Erin's rolling hills - - -
Of all its lovely shimmering lakes
And little babbling rills - - -
I hear a colleen's lilting laugh
Across a meadow fair - - -
And in my dreams it almost seems
To me that I am there.
O Ireland, O Ireland
We're never far apart - -
For you and all your beauty
Fill my mind and touch my heart.

Helen, here's a Florida poem.
Whenever I sweat, it seems I sweat,
In Florida's baking sun.
Of endless days of shimmering heat,
And Spanish's the native tongue.
I hear a senora' strident screams,
Across the K-mart lot,
And in my dreams it always seems....
That I musta took a wrong turn at Havana or something....

I'd sure like to get there, but I've gotta cover Kevin Lynch's (who's da was from Galway and his mother from Clare) office this weekend, because he's probably going to be drunk. I've been trying to find somebody to cover my cover, so's I could get down to the party.

Twas Brenden Behan, himself, came atta the Pub McSorleys with a wee bit to much tea under his belt, bumping into a matron and knocking the parcels in her arms to the pavement.
The Matron takes one look at the Behan, trying but failing to assist her in picking up her packages but unable to negeotiate standing and picking up parcels at the same time, turns beet red and addresses the 'Borstal Boy', "Brenden me husband is a member of the Guarde and if her were here he would surely take ya, fer this!"
The Behan, with out so much as the blink of an eye, replied: "Misus, of that I have no doubt, fer if he would take you, he would take anyone!" Happy St.Pat's

I have some burning questions for the intellectuals among you....which means either dad or Jim Fetter. What do you call a gathering of Gerritsen Beachites? A herd, a flock, a gaggle?....and what was St Patrick? He's claimed by Italians, Brits, Scots and French, as well as the Irish.....and I don't know if I want to open this can of worms, but if St Columb( butchered spelling) beat Patrick to Ireland by 50 years, we ought to have another Columb(us) Day. Please address all nasty responses to Bob Olson.

Hope our home grown intelligensia comes up with the burning answers to the burning questions. A bit of time on your hands Bill?
I will be in your neck of the woods this next week as my wife and I will be visiting Bill & Diane Klein, who is my oldest friend since 3rd grade, and now lives on the East Coast of Florida and then we're off to see my Aunt & Uncle who reside in Tampa.

Bill, St. Columba was as you state, first on Erin's shores. But, he was set upon by a band of Siciliens who kidnapped him, for ransom. Well, it took a long time to raise the money, and Patrick, who was just a wee gasoon when that happened, became a man and then a priest and was sent to Ireland to obtain the release of Columba. In the meantime, Columba had formed a secret society among all the Irish prisoners, which was called the "Murphyia" or "The Green Hand". Shortly before Patrick arrived, they broke out of prison, comandeared a passing ship, which was headed for Sicily (coincidently) and they all arrived there just in time for a feast for San Gennerio. The Irish say "there's many a slip between the cup and the lip', (don'tcha know) and, while at the feast, Columba slipped. Nine monthe later, Columbus was born...and the rest of his story is history, of course. Meanwhile, Patrick had all this money and no one to spend it on. What to do, what to do? Then, he had an idea. Snake skin shoes were becomming very fashionale at the time (no kidding!) and so he let it be known he'd buy up all the snkes in Ireland!! He did, the snakes are all gone from the Old Sod...and *that's* why, Bill, Columba never made a name for himself...and Patrick did! As a footnote, many generations later, while Joe Columbo was running around Brooklyn trying the kidnapping racket himself, Patrick's decendents (through his brothers, of course!) were making tons of money making Paddy-O-Furniture! There you have it, Bill. And Happy St. Patrick's Day to EVERYBODY!!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY
A Great day for the Irish and a great day to celebrate the spirit of the Irish.
I will celebrate with some imported Irish Tea along with Irish soda bread and jam and then settle in and enjoy the Great New York Irish parade down 5th Ave.
Have a Great day.
I know I will.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY TO ONE AND ALL... AS I RECALL, BILLY GIBBONS, JACKIE BARLOW, KAY LARKIN AND I USED TO HAVE TO PLAY HOOKEY FROM RESURRECTION TO GO TO THE PARADE ON FIFTH AVENUE. A FEW YEAR'S LATER, JOHN RUDDEN AND I USED TO MAKE THE ROUNDS FOLLOWING THE PARADE. SOME OF THE DATES THAT RESULTED ARE NEARLY AS MEMORABLE AS THE PARADE. IN GERRITSEN BEACH, DANNY ROGERS LEADS HIS OWN ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE LIKE THE PIED PIPER GOING THROUGH A FEW COURTS AND BACK TO FLORENCE AVENUE. ERIN GO BRAGH

Her's something I found interesting. Our local newspaper had an entire back page sold to local advertisers (in green, naturally) that encouraged people not to drink and drive on St. Patrick's Day. Sounds harmless and community minded...but is it? Why is it less insulting than, say, an ad encouraging people to be careful of the Mafia at an Itialian festival?
An assumption based on a stereo-type of enthnicity has become less a thing to be tolorated, I'd thought. But each year, Irish decendents seem to accept more, not less; or are just unaware. While we may kid about it here for example, it is between friends and meant in a joking way. When a newspaper uses it to sell ads, it's a different thing entirely. And, too, while the Leprechan is an Irish ledgend, the picture is NOT! The depictions of Leprechans is pretty common today, as most would agree. You might be surprised to know that the image seen most often, with pointy ears and a hairy face, etc., derives from early depictions of the Irish as monkeys and baboons, around the turn of the century. That came from the old country, where the English press used such illustrations to depict the Irish that rebelled against them, and as a direct insult, in many cases. This is not to put a damper on a great and fun day but just to suggest that insults and stereo-types can come in many disguises, but nonetheless are what they are. What kind of ads ran in *your* area papers? If your of Irish decent, you might think about it a bit; after all, what's fair is fair, isn't it?

Jeez, Here I was all happy and hanged over, and now Richie has me mad at leprachauns.
I never have given much thought to the hard drinking, hard fighting, stereotype, mostly because I couldn't fight my way out of a soap bubble and when it comes to "lightweights" in the drinking category, I get drunk under the table by children.
No adds in the paper down here except for the Happy St Pat's ones. I think I'll pay a little closer attention to the stereotypes, in the future. In the meantime if anybody sees a leprachaun tell him Patterson is looking for him.

It's gremlins, Peg. They used to mess up prop driven aircraft, but since the jet age they've been searching for something else to screw up. They've discovered computers. They look a little like leprachauns except that leprachauns are cuter.

BLESSING
A feel of warmth in this place.
In Winter air, a scent of harvest.
No form of prayer is needed,
When by sudden grace attended.
Naturally we fall from grace.
Mere humans we forget what light
Led us, lonely, to this place.

The scribe has returned. For all those "inquiring minds" our anticipation of renewing old friendships was fulfilled to the max. As we entered the gate, there were Adelaide and John Farrell, who were kind enough to reserve two tables for the "gang". Meeting and greeting the arrivals was Hughie Steen with his special GB beer tray (as only the inimitable Huey can do things). Among the notables were the Donald Ryans, Frank and Connie Vasquez, Janet Sweeney, Marcy Nugent (who owes me an e-mail) Martha Rogers, Frank Walsh, Bill Sweeney, the Ruddens. Big disappointment when Bill Patterson didn't show up. Guess his 'horse' sense was at work again. Entertainment was outstanding with Noel Kingston, the Irish Step Dancers and himself, Hal Roach. I know there were many names omitted in the attendees but even I don't know everyone. Of course, neice Peg and family were there too to cheer everyone up, as only she can do.
Mike Donnelly and my sister Gertrude (aka Trudy) were our special chauffeurs for the day and it was a great time for all of us. Sorry for those of you who couldn't make it - looking fwd. to next years gathering. Hope to see you all there.

Now, if we can get the other "stooges" to come it will be a party not to be missed. Forgot to mention that Lar and Marge Reid didn't make it, Lar took ill the night before and was laid up for this one. We made up for his absence, though.

Bill, I don't know if you DO already know this. Crabbait Kelly is my brother and Helen Roach's nephew. Trudy's son. I have been keeping up (trying to understand them) with your messages back and forth. You guys are funny! I had to get in on this. Colleen

Hey! You're *never* too young to be a 'Shemp'! OR A 'Moe', for that matter!! As for Curley's suggestion ( I can't seem to remember if it's 'Curley' or 'Curly'...but he's nuts, in any case!!) that we call Crabbit 'Shemp', I think it's an extrodinary idea! 'Shemp' Kelly...it has a foine ring to it, it does!

...and Marcie Nugent to. Did ye know? Paddy McGinty (Bevy Ct.) an Irishman of note bought himself a Nanny goat and thought it was a Bill and when he took the Nanny home he found it was a "bill." (male goat). Now all the girls in G.B. are wearing petty coats and leaving the rest to Providence and Paddy McGinty's goat!!! (This may appear like many postings, completely????, but Aunt Helen will appreciate.
