| Claire Deery and John Rudden, mid-1950s. The photo was
taken in the basement apartment in the Marine Park area of Herby and
Clara Muldoon, who were newlyweds at the time. We were in their bridal
party. Many Beachites upon marrying took basement apartments throughout
the area. Most of them were illegal and converted from cellars. It gave
the homeowner a chance to make extra income. Some entrances were through
a rear doorway and a boiler room! The rents were fair and it gave the
couple an opportunity to save for a down payment on a home of their own.
