I was born in the Beach. Lived at 50 Florence Avenue until 1944. Graduated P.S. 194. My grandfather Hubert Holmes owned the Bus company and built the Graham Theatre in the Beach. Mother Lillian Holmes was Campfire Girls leader in the 1920s. Started Girl Scout Day camps across the sands and All Girl Marching Band at St. James Church. Still have many fond memories of my first 16 years there.

Hi, this is Marion (Nally) Rogers (email email@example.com). Had a wonderful time reading GB MEMORIES I think its great. I hope everyone out there knows that Resurrection is planning a lot of reunions this year & if youre interested you can get in touch with them for more details. Speaking of reunions for all you ex-GBs in Florida, if you get a chance go to the WPB Irish Festival Mar. 13 & 14. A lot of people from the beach meet there & have a ball. Joe & I have been there, as vendors, since 1993, unfortunately we could not make it to FL this year, but The Reids, Dillions, Farrells, Roach, Donnelly,. Ryan, Vasquez, Cavanaugh, Fisher-Sweeney, Wood, Brown, Walsh, Jacoby, St.John, Muldoon, Hughie Steen do you recognize anyone yet? Well, the list does go on & on, all I have to say is that it keeps getting bigger each year. If you get there & want to know where to find everyone just ask Ad & John Farrell (they also sell & can be easily found by just asking any vendor where they are). Joe & I lived on the beach, he on Stuart St. & I on Seba Ave.(and he knows everything about the Whitney Mansion & remembers well when the mill burned down and who out there remembers the log pavilion used for a summer camp for the children with TB. (The Stuart St. kids used to sneak in on the lawn chairs pretending they were part of the TB kids and get free milk & graham crackers. The Beach boys havent changed much!!! This goes back to the late 1930s.) Remember the Huskies He was one of them too. (Some of you will remember my older brothers Richie & Billie aka Red ). After we got married we lived at 113 Bevy for 13 yrs (next to the OBriens) & moved to upstate NY, Saratoga, with our two children Kevin & Mary Ellen, 20 yrs. ago, but we still visit our family, Eve & Joe Barker on Merit, Bob & Lois Nally on Hymen, Danny Rogers on Florence Ave, & Martha on Bevy and sister Kathleen quite often. My Mom who is 95 yrs young is with me and had a great time reading all the beach stories, especially the ones about Kiddy Beach & the 50/50 queen, Mary, she remembers her well. I didnt see any mention of the old Blue Star Mothers Hall, aka The Old Firehouse, on Seba Ave and all the great dances they held especially the Sadie Hawkins Day dances and being thrown in jail & having to stay their until someone bailed you out (all in fun of course). Those were the good old days along with the Chicken Coop dances. Too bad the kids today will never have our memories. Before I sign off I have to thank my niece Carolyn Barker Finnelli, Garland Ct, for getting me onto this site & to Pat Steen, Florence Av.,(whose email address I got from the GUESTBOOK!!!) for tutoring me on how to negotiate this web site because I am new to this & quite illiterate when it comes to the web.
Reading about Gerritsen Beach has been great. I always said it was a great place to gtow up. Would love to hear from someone that remembers me Kathy Nedwell Joyce. e-mail danjoyce@AOL.com
This site is fantastic! Just ran across the picture of the bridge over the inlet...spent many a happy hour going under in my uncle Tony Orlando's boat on the way to try and catch some fluke, or sea bass or porgies...somtimes we even got adventuresome and went "outside" for the bigger fish...out to Scotland or Ambrose Lightships...one time, he owned a sailboat, which was moored across the creek from the foot of Dare Ct....we got out into Jamaica bay..and the wind and the tide turned just wrong and the Coast Guard towed us in...after 6 hours, they finally came back after we hailed them (no radio), and as we came in under the bridge here was a row boat with my mother and aunt in it trying to find us!!!BUT does anyone remember the day that bridge COLLAPSED? It was while the Belt Parkway was under construction, and I came home on the bus from first grade at Resurrection to find everybody down at the end of Dare Court looking at it laying in the water...it made the front page of the Daily News...I don't remember if anyone was hurt, but I don't think so, since the parkway was not open to traffic yet...of course, I'm probably ten years late and a thousand dollars short on telling this story, since I haven't been through the whole site yet, and it's a story probably often told somewhere in here...Oh, well, at least I tried to add something new...but you really never can, can you? This is Pat (Trish) Steen (email:YO1964PMS@aol.com). For the past week I've been browsing this site and learn more and more about the Beach way before I was born. I was born in 1964 and lived on Merit Ct. with my parents Bill & Pat, brothers Billy, Jimmy & Raymond for 21 yrs. Went to Resurrection (Class of '78). Moved around Brooklyn for a while, but always came back to the Beach. I now live on Florence Ave. and Fane Ct. with my longtime beau, Timmy Duffy (Resurrection Class of '70), son of Joe(the butcher) & Genevieve(Somers)Duffy of Fane Ct. & Everett Ave. I really enjoy reading all the stories about the Beach, I've been telling all my friends about it. Anyone who remembers me or Timmy, or our families, don't hesitate to e-mail us. We'd really enjoy chatting with you. Till then, so long!!
This is Pat Steen again, forgot to mention my mom's maiden name is O'Brien, parents Julia Mae & Robert; brothers Robert, Gerard(Roddy), Bill, John and sister Eileen. She lived at 56 or 58 Aster as a little girl and then moved to 68 Florence. My dad's parents were James & Mary (Mewha)Steen, brothers James & Hughie. Lived at 117 Hyman Ct. Thanks for reading. The Beach webpage is a great idea! My brother John Hughes told me about it just the other day. A wonderful historical treasure!!! My Name is Ed Hughes and I lived on Gotham Ave. from 1944-65, went to Resurrection, did little league and remember some fine childhood times. My Mother and Father are still in the Beach on Gotham Avenue. Today I want to say Hi to both my brother John's old friends and mine. Top of the morning to you all.
Hi,Mike (Bucky) Heinz here! I would just like to pass along the fact that Resurrection is Celebrating their 75th Anniversary this Year. The Committee would love to hear from anyone who was in the Parish, went to the School,or lived in the Beach. In,particular, Claire Barbieri, whose on the Committee, would love to hear from the Graduating "Class of '67". Unfortunately, she's not "online", but she can be reached by phone at (718)332-8591. I hear a Big Bash is being planned at "Russo's On The Bay". Hope to see everybody there. BTW my email: email@example.com
Hi My name is Frank Walsh and I lived at 19 Abbey Ct. Some of the names on the website I haven't heard for many years. My grandmother moved to Gerritsen Beach in the 40's with her 4 children. Later on they moved back to Jersey City but kept the house on Abbey Ct. until about 15 years ago. I believe our family was the last of the summer residents. It's a small world! I live on Eastern Long Island and it turns out my Stepson is going to marry a girl whose family was from the Beach ( Howell's). As a matter of fact it was him who told me about this site. I have many great memories of the Beach. Thanks for the uplift and the great site. firstname.lastname@example.org
Hello all!!! If anyone knows of any graduates from Resurrection-Class of 1978, please send me their home address or email address. Working on getting our 25th Reunion together. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Pat Steen at YO1964PMS@aol.com

I lived in the beach until 1982.Now live in scenic Ulster county. This has brought back a lot of good times. If there is anyone that went to Resurrection and graduated in 1966 or Sheepshead and graduated in 1970 I'd love to hear from you. I work in the city and sometimes go back to the beach to see the little remaining family that's there. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me more about the 75th anniversary at Resurrection. When, where and who to contact. Hope to hear from some of you soon. Bob Seeger BSenterpri@aol.com

I have lived in the old section all my life... i love GB and the people who live here.. This is a great site...
Glad to see that GB has made its mark on the Internet!! A friend passed this along to me, and I thought I'd give a brief history of my family, etc. My grandparents, David and Mary Murray moved here way back when GB was all summer bungalows, on Opal Court. Part of my family still remain long term GB residents, including myself. I still live in the new section, maiden name is Murray and father's name is Dave (or Davie to those that knew him). My grandmother had sold her house a few years back and moved down to Florida. I am now raising my family down here in "the beach", and am happy to say that its still the same as I remember it to be growing up (for the most part). Lots of good hardworking people, and good souls. I am glad that someone created this site and look forward to checking in from time to time. If anyone out there remembers us, please feel free to write. I also married Kevin McCormick, of the Dare Court McCormick's, for those that are familiar with him. Keep up the interesting information here!!! ZDTW65A@Prodigy.com
A friend forwarded me this site and its great to see what history "the beach" has had in the past. I am a lifelong member of GB, and my grandparents bought their house (sold 8 yrs ago), on Opal court way back when GB was still only summer bungalows. She has since passed away, but she had many, many pictures of what Kiddie Beach, the "Avenue" and other areas of the beach looked like before it became more poplulated. If you are interested in posting them, I'd be more than happy to get them from my Aunt who lives in Florida. My maiden name is Murray, daughter of Davie and Maureen, if anyone remembers. I am married with one daughter, and one son on the way (we peeked)!! Glad to say that we have decided to raise our family here. There are not too many areas left in Brooklyn that you can consider "safe" these days and "the beach" is certainly still one of them. Full of good people. I'm glad that this site is established, but we don't want to let too many people know about our safe haven!!!! Keep it between the us beach rats!!!!! Good luck and I hope to see more names that I recognize!! By the way, just wanted to say hello to Bill and Janis Samuelson and Pat Minze!!!! I saw you!!!! Margaret McCormick
Ooops........forgot to add my email address:
My name is Arthur Stich, son of Arthur Stich (6 Nova Court) and Elizabeth Hammer (113 Gain Court). I was born in '39 and we moved to NJ in '45. I don't remember much about the Beach because I was 5 when we moved. I do remember the 'chute drop at Coney as I was able to see it from our massive front stoop. I remember catching killeys in a milk bottle at the end of the street. At the time, the streets were cinders. No paving or sewers yet. Also the fresh fruit and veggie man with the hand drawn cart and the junk collector. And having to block out the windows at night so the emeny wouldn't see our house. My mother took me on the last trolley ride before it was shut down. Once my father took me to Engine 321 Firehouse. He was a buff way back when. We knew Charley Hodgets, who lived, I think, at the end of Seba. He was the chief of the G.B. Volunteer FD. I think he had a daughter named Virginia, but I'm not sure. Also remember the Elsie K fishing boat docked on the end of the canal and the church nearby. As you can probably tell, I haven't been back in over 35 years. I guess the place has changed quite a bit. A note to the Master-- I have 2 pictures taken in front of Engine 321 FD with a real old truck (1920-1935?) and some men. If you would like me to e-mail it to you send me an e-mail address. This is a most interesting site and the old pictures brought back some memories. My e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
April 1, 1999 This is a wonderful site, my sister, Irene, told me about it. Can't wait to hear from all my old classmates from Resurrection Class of 1964. Those were the good old days of clean innocent fun. Still keep in touch with Denise Sullivan from that class. We were best friends then and still remain friends. Saw a message from Roddy Jenkins, he was in that class but left no E-mail address. I live in Staten Island for 27 years, still married to my wonderful husband and have 3 wonderful grown children. Keep in touch. Maureen (Jones) Marotta e-mail at Fmaro3310@aol.com

Greetings from one of the Smith kids from 114 Gotham...just across the street from St. James. Thank you Mike Karnbach and Bobby Hanson for sharing the wealth. I'm one of 11 children of Anne and John Smith. This is Tommy writing from San Diego CA where I am on active duty with the US Navy serving as a Chaplain. Born and raised in the Beach. Graduated Resurrection in 1965 and Sheepshead Bay HS in 1969. Original member of the "Duds" crowd that mostly hung out in front of my parents house on Gotham Ave. Later we formed a softball team and played up the park for a good number of years (1969-1975)?. Does anybody remember a band...Jimmy Witkowshi, Eddie Gigliardi, Barry Frier and me. The Shades of Reason... We played at the dances up at Resurrection (1968-69). So glad to be able to go back and remember some good days long gone from Gerristen Beach. Much more.. Warm Regards, Tommy Smith email@example.com

If anyone remembers me, please drop me a line.
I lived in the Beach for 25 years and I still come back to visit the neighborhood.
I lived at 73 Celeste Court (corner of Channel Avenue). I have great memories of Gerritsen Beach - the Christmas parties at the Court Club, the burning of the Christmas Trees in the weeds. (My brother, Joe and I got a kick out of that each year), The Graham.
