Marret, Mau Mau Island was described by Bill pretty well. It actually was built up during the '60s on what was merely a small grass island in the middle of the "Back Creek". Access to the island for the garbage trucks was from Flatbush Ave across from Floyd Bennett. Access for the "Beach" people was via swimming or boat. The island of trash was then covered by a pipeline that pumped sand and water from Jamaica Bay 24 hours a day. The water ran off and the remaining sand covered the garbage. I wonder how the EPA would react to that today? It was a sea gull paradise for years. Jumping from the bridge was a "right of passage" to being a real man, so I thought. My cousin (a girl) told me how she use to dive(yes dive)from the Belt Parkway Bridge at "The End". She is Joan Aitken and I believe her. That was Mau Mau Island. Wonder how it looks today? Anyone have a picture? Someone did mention seeing dolphins back there recently, is that true?
