"The Beach" was not without it traumatic incidents. I remember the time 1957 or 58. The phone rang in my house early in the morning from one of my nosey aunts who always read the paper early in each day to get the scoop before everyone else. She told my mom to look in the Daily News page referencing chapter and verse. The story was about a couple living on Gotham or Florence Ave. They were murdered during the night in their own home. Sorry to say, I don't remember their names, but a man was arrested and convicted. The only details I can recall was the search for the weapon. They had divers in the "Creek" looking for the gun. It was located at the end of Bijou Ave in the water by the Civic Club. The story was a reality check for me. Gerritsen Beach was not Camelot.
