Sometime during the early 50's, one of the trawlers came upon a dead whale out off rockaway. They towed it in to Gerrittsen inlet, and had it tied up over by Abe Kleins bait barge. It was in the Brooklyn Eagle. The darn think stunk so bad, they had to tow it back out and I think the Coast Guard blew it up, so it would be a better source of crab food.
