GRAVESEND BROOKLYN: CONEY ISLAND AND SHEEPHEAD BAY, IMAGES OF AMERICA SERIES, by Eric Ierardi (Dover, NH: Arcadia Publishing, 1996) A book of photographs, mostly taken in the 1920s. Three Gerritsen Beach photos: (1) A beautiful long-distance shot of Gerritsen's mill and the Whitney mansion, very stark and illustrating the lack of surrounding structures. (2) A photo of Gerritsen's mill. I think this is the same one that appears in Lost Worlds, one of my links. (3) The Whitney mansion. Also many photos of the Avenue U and Kings Highway sections, Coney Island, and Sheepshead Bay. Superbly printed, with crisp, sharp photos.($16.99 List)

BROOKLYN'S GOLD COAST: THE SHEEPSHEAD BAY COMMUNITIES, by Merlis, Rosenzweig, and Miller (Brooklyn: Sheepshead Bay Historical Association and Israelowitz Publishing, 1997). A historical section on Gerritsen Beach along with a dozen photos. Fascinating information about the neighborhood, but the photos tend to be less than sharp. Worthwhile. ($19.95 list)

BROOKLYN: THE WAY IT WAS, by Brian Merlis (Brooklyn: Israelowitz Publishing, 1995). Over 200 photos, well printed. Only one Gerritsen Beach photo, which I think appears in the other book by this publisher, but lots of great photos of other parts of Brooklyn. Several old maps that show Gerritsen as an area characterized by creeks and marshes.   ($24.95 list)

These books can be obtained online at either www.barnesandnoble.com or www.amazon.com.

I hope to post some of the facts from these three books in a week or two.
