posted December 30, 2000 12:11 S=ET You are so right Victor, growing up in the beach was like no place else, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I type with one finger and I'm pretty fast at it too, you'll get faster with practice. I bet it seemed alot easier hitting that spaulding then it is typing laugh. |

posted December 28, 2000 11:38 S=ET Remembering back to the "kiddie Beach' at low tide and the great clamming there. Also the floundering around the sunken boat by the Sands. How many people out there caught the spirrings and used them for snapper fishing Or floated from pile to pile scooping crabs. Catching eels in the eel pots baited with broken up horshoe crabs (conservation was unknown in those days and the were plentiful). Or the boxing matches in the fire house on Seba Ave. My Dad (Walter) used to coach the PAL team in a building on Garritsen Ave. Do any remember carrying out the coke (coal) ashes and putting them in the deepest hole. Or the wash water to the storm sewers so it wouldn't fill up the cesspool. This all happened regularly in the old section. How about the Hurricain that shut down most streets with falling trees. Of Gerritsen Beach I remember many things but most of my memories are associated with the water. The stickball games on the dirt roads and the touch tackle games on the same roads. Fourth of July was a big thing down there. I remember four of us putting four cherry bombs under an agot pan. Around the corner came a police car and the pan blew up in the air landing on their hood. We ran like hell but when we looked back the cops were laughing so hard they were crying. The only thing they said to us was be careful and don't get hurt. We used to go down to the creek and bomb the community on the other side by shoving pipes in the ground dropping in a cherry bomb and then a rock. Acted like a mortar. No body got hurt though we probably should have. Most kids had the brains to get out of the way when firing the stuff. How about the small fires during the summer where the neighbors used to gather round (the fire kept the skeeters away) and socialize into the night. The kids used to throw in potatoes and onions in the fire to roast them. Those are the days I miss. Close neighbors and better yet close friends. |

posted December 27, 2000 23:02 S=ET Eddie Davis I still think of our days bowling in the Cort Club Junior league run by Bill Seegar sr. Also at this time of year I remember your family selling Christmas trees on Nostrand ave after you moved out of the beach. Isn't this site wonderful, we owe all the thanks to Marret for starting it, I've enjoyed it now for almost 2 years. It is nice to see you here, what are you doing in Illinois |

posted December 27, 2000 21:42 S=ET I have thoroughly enjoyed the last few hours, reading about "The Beach". The only memories I truly cherish are the days I spent growing up there. I lived on Landis Ct.(old section)from '60 to '64. I had five sisters and three brothers. I currently live in Marion,IL(home of John Gotti)and have stayed in touch with some of the many friends I made while living in the beach. I will be actively looking at this site and hope to hear from more of the greatest people I have ever known. I was glad to hear about the story "On Frozen Pond", by Jimmy Fetter. Oh yes, I remember it well. I never thought that Victor Pacilio would end up in CA....not his style. Jimmy Cincola, a postal cop...who would have thought? Lastly, I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Paul Eckleman. He was a great impersonator/singer of Al Jolson, during the Resurrection Jubilee stage shows, of which I participated. I believe that he had a son Paul Jr, who went to school with my younger brother Tommy Davis. In any event, this site is just indicative of why the people of "The Beach" were wonderful to know and be around, during the formidable years of growing up. Keep 'em coming. |
