I stumbled across your Gerritsen Beach website while researching for old maps of Bklyn. WOW, what a nice place to visit. The pictures were great. I lived in the Beach from age 17 til marriage but did attend JHS 278 with lots of great Beach kids. You brought back a lot of fond memories. Thanks so much. Judy

I recently congratulated a young man on his becoming a U.S. Marine. I followed that statement with what I thought to be a humorous comment: "about 10 of us from the beach finished Parris Island in 1951. All the wimps became Swabbies..." Several friends did find it humorous, but if only one person did not, I feel it my responsibility to apologize to any man, woman or family member of the many men from the beach (and elsewhere) who served our country in whatever capacity. I had a great-uncle who served in the Navy in WWI, 2 uncles served in the Navy in WWII, a Broadhead is entombed in the USS Arizona, a cousin in the Army was severely wounded at Normandy; not to mention other family and other branches of the service. I would never intentionally dishonor any person who served our country, and there is not a Marine worth his salt who does not place the Navy Corpsmen on the highest pinnacle of honor.

MARION [NALLY] ROGERS. I am going to see Alec, his wife, and MRS. CAMPBELL, for breakfast at 10 am on TUES.2/8. If you want to send a message from your mother, I will print it out to give to Mrs. Campbell. Either send it to me or on this page. I heard the two gentlemen who bought the Gather are named Culum and Aiden - they used to hang out at the Dockside Cafe behind the Tamaqua, and from what I hear, are two really nice guys. It should be opened real soon.

Live in Fl. since 1973. Two sons - Kevin 29, and Sean 27. Kevin & Mary have two children, Ryan 8 and Caitlin 3. Sean and Lisa live in Arizona. My husband retired from the fire dept. here and became an electrician who works much too hard! I was a nurse for 20 years until my back gave out. Currently writing a cook-book (would love "child-hood" recipes!). Our family was intricately tied to the Donovan's of 120 Just Court. Mom was Mary Callahan of Whitney Avenue, Resurrection class of 1942. Dad was imported from Bay Ridge and was a NYC Correction Officer all my life. I was in the Vollies band and Dad played taps on Memorial Day. Hung out on Dare Court & Cyrus Avenue a lot.....with Ken Knoke, Lenny Gray, LeRoy O'Neill, Don Perry, Lars Larsson, Pete Murphy, Marianne Vitzthum, Nancy Saunders...and lots of other people. Where are those guys??????????

It was great to see the article about my Dad (Ben Polay) once again. It was also nice to see the comments of those who knew him well. He built the toy store on honesty. I thank him and my Mom for that trait. My nephew was not sure who the & Son was. It was for my late brother Mel ; not me. Ah, the fate of the youngest. For those who remeber me, I served 20 years in the USAF retiring as a Major in 1986. I presently teach aviation science and aviation safety courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. Drop me a line.

Thank you so much for the article on Ben Polay. He is my grandfather and passed away in July 1997. I think every kid growing up should have a grandfather who owned a toy store. Unfortunately, he sold it and moved to Florida when I was 5. The (&son) in the name of the store was either my father Mel or my Uncle Michael. My dad passed away July 1995 and Uncle Mike is living in Arizona

Eleanor and I lived on the canal at 32 Gotham Ave. from 1946 until 1971. We raised six children there -- Joey. Jackie, Mary, Stevie, Michael, and Tommy We left the Beach when my company moved to Connecticut. Our neighbors were the Shine's, the Mikulski's, the Kelly's, the Stahl's, the Fearons, the Alneys, the Tizzards, the DiNatales, the Houldsworths, Mrs Hoehneman, and of course many more. I built the second concrete bulkhead on the canal back in the early '50's, and it still looks pretty good the last time I saw it. This is a great web site and I hope we can contact some of our old friends.

Hi! I'm Joe Colombo. Nice job on the web page. Can't wait to tell my folks about it. We grew up on Gotham Ave. on the Canal between 1946 and 1970. I had a band call the Vibrations with Terry Ennis, Jerry Anderson and Tom Schroeder. We played for the dances at Ressurection in the early 60's. Our big competitors was a band called the Rythmics. Would love to hear from anyone who was a teen during these years. Currently I teach high school physics and astronomy on Long Island but i still gig on the weekends. Once again...great job on the site!
